Interview with Silvia Ahamer
Interview by Tanya Hosford of Trakehners Australia.

Q. Was the tour what you were hoping for and did this meet or exceed your expectations?

A. I have been very honoured to represent the AWHA Ltd on this first combined tour. My hopes have been high as this was one of the AWHA Ltd’s goals we have been working on for some time and now it has become a reality. I was very excited to meet Matthias Werner and be able to work and also learn more from him, especially about the foals. Tanya has done a wonderful job in the organisation of this tour and it was so nice to meet her as we had many phone calls and emails in the last months leading up to the tour. A big thank you to Tanya for all the work from myself and the AWHA Ltd Federal Board. We would like you to know how much we appreciated what you have done for us. This tour did blow me away and I have still not come down yet fully. A big thank you to all the members that have supported this tour to make it happen by showing us their great quality of horses. The friendliness, how everybody made us feel welcome and the hospitality we received. I have met so many people in person and have made new friends in each state. I have to say the tour was a great success.

Q. Was Matthias a benefit to the AWHA Ltd section of the tour?

A. Yes, a very big one. Matthias is not only professional and knowledgeable but also a very open and nice person. He is always willing to answer questions about breeding and also about the horses we assessed together, helping to get the best out of them so you could give that better mark, even if you had to wait a little bit longer. I liked that a lot of him as it showed his passion for the horses and in that way we fitted together perfectly. I also learnt a lot from him about some little, logical things that you do not necessarily think about, like how a plated tail can affect a horse. I would like, on behalf of the AWHA Ltd, to let Matthias know how much we appreciated his acceptance of our offer of AWHA Ltd Honourary Classifier for the tour and how he helped us in many ways. Thank you so much Matthias.

Q. With the introduction of new bloodlines via frozen semen to the Australian market, what impact do you think this will have and the benefits?

A. The impact of frozen semen and also the use of new bloodlines is very high in Australia and will always be, and we can see this already in the good Warmblood horses Australia has bred and also starting to go now in the competitions The benefit that Australia has is that we have very good Thoroughbred mares to keep the influence of them with frozen semen stallions of different bloodlines in our breeding program and produce an even better Sporthorse.

Q. Any memorable moments from your trip around Australia?

A. For me I will never forget this trip, the horses or the people; every place was special. A very special moment for me was when I first meet Matthias and Tanya and knew that we three clicked together. Another one was the priceless face of Tanya when Matthias told her that he is going to change the flat tyre as she was straight into the boot to get the new one out. It was very early in the morning, still dark and we had to watch. Also when Cody from “Film Livestock Australia” showed us their film trained mare. That was a very special treat to watch this horse perform, absolutely amazing.

Q. We know the Trakehners Australia committee is already onto planning the next tour. Are you excited to see the friendship of the two Associations continue?

A. Oh yes, I believe we did form a friendship together and the two Associations will continue to work to make it even better. I look forward to it.

Planning has already commenced for the next combined Trakehners Australia and AWHA Ltd Assessment Tour, scheduled from 21 Feb to 11 Mar 14. More information will be provided as it becomes available!
